Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is a vibrant blend of tradition and modernity. Whether you're visiting its stunning mosques and palaces, lounging in luxury resorts, or exploring it’s amazing shopping centres, knowing what to wear in Abu Dhabi is essential for comfort, style, and respect for local culture.
I would describe Abu Dhabi as Dubai’s big brother, slightly more conservative, certainly less bling. Abu Dhabi whilst a great holiday destination is also a serious business hub and that shows in the number of locals compared to Dubai. We visited at the end of December. The temperatures were still in the late 20’s so perfect weather for exploring. This blog doesn’t cover the sights but as well as the Grand Mosque I would also recommend the Palace which was just amazing.
So here’s out guide on what to wear and not wear in Abu Dhabi.
Why Dress Code Matters in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, one of the seven UAE states values modesty and decorum. While it is more relaxed than some of it’s neighbours, it’s still important to dress conservatively in public areas out of respect for local customs — and in some cases, to avoid being denied entry to certain venues.
General Dress Code Rules in Abu Dhabi
Before we get into specific outfits, here are some general principles to follow:
👗 Cover shoulders and knees in public
👚 Avoid tight, transparent, or low-cut clothing
🕌 Dress extra modestly at mosques or religious sites
👒 Swimwear is only appropriate at the beach or pool — not public areas
🌞 Lightweight fabrics are key due to the desert heat
What Women Should Wear in Abu Dhabi
1. Day-to-Day Outfits
Women don’t need to wear an abaya or cover their hair in most public spaces, but modest dressing is expected.
Flowy maxi dresses or midi skirts are great
Lightweight trousers or culottes with a tucked-in blouse or t-shirt
Linen or cotton tops that cover the shoulders
Jumpsuits with sleeves or a light kimono thrown over a tank top
Pro tip: Pack a scarf or pashmina in Winter— handy for sun protection or extra coverage when needed. Tunic tops are great for wearing in UAE. They give modesty with still a bit of glamour and help channel your inner Jackie O. Add a pair of big sunglasses and cropped trousers and you’re on fire!
2. Evening & Dining Out
Most upscale restaurants are inside hotels and malls where the dress code is more relaxed — but still stylish and elegant.
Long dresses, jumpsuits or chic palazzo trousers
Avoid showing cleavage or too much skin
Closed-toe shoes or fashionable sandals are ideal. Flip flops would be suitable only for a beac bar environment
I took a lightweight jacket (it was December) and I needed it here in the evenings.
3. Beach & Pool Wear
Bikinis and swimsuits are fine in private hotel pools or beach resorts — but always cover up when leaving the beach area.
Swimsuit + stylish cover-up or kaftan
No topless sunbathing (it’s illegal!)
4. What to Wear to a Mosque
If you’re visiting the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, you'll need to follow strict guidelines:
You can wear an abaya but this is not compulsory if you follow the general principles. Abayas can be bought at the mosque but be aware you’ll be charged premium prices for buying there
Headscarf is essential to cover your hair
Full-length sleeves and trousers or long dress underneath
Don’t wear anything sheer. I was wearing wide leg long trousers, a t-shirt and silk shirt over and carried a pashmina to cover my head and was fine. My elder sister had a linen shirt with trousers and she was denied entry and had to go and buy an abaya. My younger sister had a long dress which finished at the calves and also had to go buy leggings so please do go prepared. There are some lovely ladies there who will help you fix your scarf on your head in the Arabic fashion.
What Men Should Wear in Abu Dhabi
1. Casual Wear
Men (as always!) have slightly more leeway, but modesty still applies.
Lightweight trousers or chinos
Short- or long-sleeve shirts (avoid sleeveless tops in public)
T-shirts are fine if they’re not too tight or graphic-heavy
Tailored shorts are acceptable in tourist areas, but best avoided in mosques or government buildings
2. Evening Out
Dress smart in the evenings:
A collared shirt or polo with trousers or smart jeans
Closed-toe shoes for restaurants or lounges. Again flip flops should be avoided unless on the beach.
3. Beach Attire
Swim trunks are acceptable at the pool or beach
Always wear a T-shirt or cover-up when walking through public hotel areas
Cultural Etiquette Around Clothing
Even though Abu Dhabi is modern, respect for culture is crucial:
Don’t wear offensive logos or slogans
If unsure, observe how locals and expats dress and follow their lead
Packing List: Essentials for Abu Dhabi
For Women:
Maxi/midi dresses
Loose trousers or culottes
Modest tops and blouses (tunic tops are ideal)
Swimwear + kaftan
Light jacket or shawl
Scarf for mosques
Comfortable sandals and dress shoes
For Men:
Lightweight trousers or chinos
Short- and long-sleeve shirts
Smart casual evening wear
Swimwear
Loafers or closed shoes for dining
